The Simbahöllin Cookbook was written and self-published by myself and my friend Janne. Having worked with Janne in her coffeehouse for quite a few years, this project was something of a love-letter to the coffeehouse itself, and the part of Iceland it is situated in. In the book we aimed to communicate the story of the building, the business, and the life that goes on in and around it. The book includes our own recipes developed over the years working in the coffeehouse kitchen and living in the area, as well as traditional recipes from Janne’s heritage and from locals in the village. Throughout there is photography that gives a feel of life around the year in the village and in the coffeehouse and allows guests to take a piece of the experience home with them. Ultimately it is a tangible piece of the coffeehouse experience that visitors can take home, and that locals have shared with friends and relatives abroad.

For the project I contributed writing, recipes, photography, and overall layout design of the book. But it was very much a collaborative effort with many of our friends contributing photography, illustrations, and lots of advice and ideas.

We were honoured that our book won 3rd prize in the Gourmand World Food Awards, Pastry Category in 2019

You can find more about the coffeehouse and the book on the Simbahöllin website.
